Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Guruparb or Guru Parv, is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism, Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is one of the most important festivals of the Sikh community and is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the world including India. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan). He gave the message of unity, brotherhood, humanity, and following the path of truth to the society.

The Sikh community organizes special prayer meetings and kirtans to celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti. Akhand Paath (48 hours of non-stop Gurbani recitation) takes place in gurdwaras. Nagar Kirtans (religious processions) are also organized on this day, in which the Guru Granth Sahib is carried in a palanquin around the city.
