Skanda Shashthi

Skanda Shashthi is a major festival in Hinduism dedicated to Lord Kartikeya (Skanda), which is celebrated with reverence and devotion especially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and other regions of South India. This festival is celebrated on the Shashthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Skanda Shashthi is also known as 'Subramanya Shashthi'.

Importance of Skanda Shashthi

The festival of Skanda Shashthi is celebrated as the victory of Lord Kartikeya by killing the demon Surapadma and freeing the world from his terror. Lord Kartikeya is considered the god of strength, warfare, and courage. On this day he is worshipped as a symbol of strength, courage, and victory over evil.

Worship Method

Fast:

On the day of Skanda Shashthi, devotees keep a Nirjala fast, in which water and food are abandoned. Many people keep this fast for the entire day and night and break the fast the next day.

Worship and Archana:

The idol or picture of Lord Kartikeya is placed in a clean place and flowers, incense, lamps, and sweets are offered. Devotees chant special mantras of Lord Kartikeya.

Paath and Kirtan:

On Skanda Shashthi, the glory of Lord Kartikeya is sung, story reading and bhajan-kirtan are done.

Sadhana and Dhyan:

Worshiping Lord Skanda on this day gives special fruits. Devotees receive blessings from Lord Kartikeya through meditation and sadhana.
