Asha Dashami Vrat Katha: Mythological Significance And Vrat Vidhi

The fast of Asha Dashami is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi. This fast is observed on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. This fast is considered especially fruitful for the fulfillment of a person's desires and prosperity. All the wishes of the devotees who observe this fast are fulfilled.

According to mythology, in ancient times, a devotee couple lived in a village. Their names were Satyavan and Savitri. Both of them were extremely pious and truthful. Their only wish was to have the happiness of children. But despite performing worship and penance for years, they did not get children. One day, they went to a sage, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, and told him their problem. The sage suggested them to observe the Asha Dashami fast. He said, "On the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month, observe a fast and worship Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi. This fast is extremely auspicious and by observing it all your wishes will be fulfilled." Satyavan and Savitri observed the Asha Dashami fast with full rituals. Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi were pleased with the effect of the fast and blessed them by giving darshan. With their blessings, the couple got a beautiful and radiant child. Since then this fast started being observed to fulfill wishes. It is believed that all the wishes of the devotees who observe the Asha Dashami fast are fulfilled.

Method of fasting

  1. Bathing and purification: Take bath in the morning and wear clean clothes.
  2. Resolution of the fast: Take a resolution of fasting in front of Lord Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi.
  3. Preparation for worship: Clean the place of worship and install the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi.
  4. Pooja material: Lamp, incense stick, Offer sandalwood, flowers, naivedya (fruits, sweets), Panchamrit and Tulsi leaves.
  5. Mantra chanting: Chant the mantras “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya” and “Om Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah”.
  6. Katha Shravan: Listen or read Asha Dashami Vrat Katha.
  7. Aarti and Prasad: Perform Aarti of the Lord and distribute Prasad. Do it.
  8. Break the fast: Fast The fast should be observed the next day by feeding Brahmins and making donations.
