Matrika: Nine divine forms of Goddess Durga

In Hinduism, the Matrikas—also known as the Matrika Devis or simply the Matrikas—constitute a group of various goddesses (typically seven or eight in number) who are revered as divine mothers. These goddesses represent different manifestations of Shakti (divine power) and are described in the Puranas, Tantric texts, and other religious literature. The Matrikas embody the powers and distinct attributes of various male deities.

Saptamatrika or Ashtamatrika:

The Saptamatrikas constitute a group of seven goddesses, while in some traditions, eight goddesses are worshipped as the Ashtamatrikas. The seven principal Matrikas among them are as follows:

1. Brahmi:

Significance: She is the goddess of creation and knowledge.

2. Vaishnavi:

Representation: The power (Shakti) of Vishnu.

3. Maheshwari:

Representation: The power (Shakti) of Shiva.
Description: Maheshwari rides upon Nandi (the divine bull) and possesses four hands, in which she holds a trident (Trishul), a small drum (Damaru), a weapon, and a rosary (Mala).
Significance: She is the goddess of destruction and regeneration.

4. Indrani

Representation:  The Shakti (power) of Indra 

5. Kaumari:

Representation:  The Shakti of Kartikeya (Kumar)
Description: Kaumari rides upon a peacock and possesses four or six arms, in which she holds a Shakti (spear), a garland, and a weapon. 
Significance: She is the Goddess of war and victory.

6. Varahi:

Representation:  The Shakti of Varaha
Description:  Varahi rides upon a boar and possesses four arms, in which she holds a Hala (plough), a weapon, and a garland.
Significance: She is the Goddess of power and the protection of the Earth.

7. Chamunda:

Representation: The Shakti of Durga or Kali 
Description:  Chamunda's vehicle is the cremation ground, and she possesses four or eight arms, in which she holds a Trishul (trident), a Khappar (skull-cup), a Mund (severed head), and a weapon.
Significance: She is the Goddess of fear and destruction.
