Kartik Amavasya is the Amavasya date of Kartik month according to Hindu calendar. This day is considered extremely auspicious for peace of ancestors, Lakshmi Pujan and charity. Kartik month is considered to be the favorite month of Lord Vishnu himself and fasting and donating on this day brings special virtuous results.

Importance of Kartik Amavasya

  • On this day, Shradh, Tarpan and donation are done with the wish of peace of ancestors and salvation.
  • It is also considered to be a day of wealth and prosperity, because in many places there is a tradition of Lakshmi Pujan on this day.
  • Bathing, lamp donation and fasting have special importance in Kartik month.

  • Light a lamp in the temple of Peepal, Tulsi or Lord Vishnu.
  • Perform tarpan and pinddaan for ancestors.
  • Worship Lakshmi and decorate the house with a garland of lamps.
  • Donate food, clothes and money to the needy.

Religious belief

It is mentioned in the Puranas that bathing in a holy river and lighting lamps on Kartik Amavasya destroys all sins and a person attains the best world. It is said to be the day of both ancestral satisfaction and divine grace.
