In Hinduism, Pradosh Vrat is one of the main fasts to please Lord Shiva. This fast is observed on the Trayodashi date of every lunar fortnight. When this fast falls on Sunday, it is called Ravi Pradosh Vrat.
Importance of Ravi Pradosh Vrat
- Ravi Pradosh Vrat gives longevity.
- This fast is considered to be especially effective for Pitra Dosh Nivaran and Karma Dosh Shanti.
- By the grace of Lord Shiva, the devotee gets health benefits and happiness and peace in the family.
- This fast also removes Surya Dosh and gives happiness of children.
Worship Method
- Take a pledge of fasting after taking bath in the morning.
- Offer water to Sun God and chant Aditya Mantra.
- Pradosh Kaal (after sunset) anoint Lord Shiva with Gangajal, milk, curd, honey, Belpatra, Dhatura and fruits and flowers.
- Worship the Shiva family by offering incense, lamp and naivedya.
- Chant Shiv Chalisa or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.
- Conclude the fast after listening to the story.
Rules of the fast
- The fasting person can keep a fruit or waterless fast throughout the day.
- Lies, anger and impurity should be avoided.
- In the evening, go to the Shiva temple and do the Aarti.
