The festival of Gangaur Vrat is mainly celebrated in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and other parts of North India. This fast is observed by married women for the longevity of their husbands and a happy married life, while unmarried girls observe this fast to get a good groom. Gangaur festival is celebrated on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. In this, Lord Shiva (Gan) and Mother Parvati (Gaur) are worshiped.
Gangaur Vrat Katha
According to mythology, once upon a time, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were traveling on the earth. They reached a forest where some women were worshiping Gangaur. The women welcomed Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati and gave them hospitality. Mother Parvati was pleased with their devotion and blessed those women with unbroken good fortune. She said, "Women who will observe this fast with true heart and devotion will get unbroken good fortune, happy life and all their wishes will be fulfilled." Since then this fast became famous as Gangaur and married and unmarried women started observing it with great devotion.Method of Gangaur Vrat
- Bath and purification: Take bath in the morning and wear clean clothes.
- Gangaur idol: Make an idol of Gangaur (Ganesh and Gauri) from clay or wood.
- Preparation for Puja: Decorate the idol with beautiful clothes and ornaments.
- Puja Samagri: Keep Kalash, Durva, wheat sprouts, Roli, Akshat, flowers, water, Mehndi, and sweets.
- Puja Vidhi:
- Offer water to the idol of Gangaur.
- Offer vermilion, sandalwood, and flowers.
- Offer wheat sprouts and Suhaag items (bangles, bindi, etc.) to Mata Gauri.
- Katha Shravan:Recite or listen to the Gangaur Vrat Katha.
- Songs and Bhajans: Sing traditional songs and bhajans in praise of Gangaur Mata.
- Fast Observance: Observe the fast throughout the day and eat fruits.
- Viserion of the fast: Immerse the Gangaur idol in water the next day or at the end of the fast.
