The festival of Holika Dahan symbolizes the victory of good over evil. It is primarily associated with the story of Prahlad, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, and his father, Asuraraj Hiranyakashyap.

Story Description

Hiranyakashyap had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma by performing severe penance that he could not be killed by any human or animal; neither in the day nor in the night; neither on the earth nor in the sky. Due to this boon, he became arrogant and tyrannical. He ordered his subjects to worship only him. However, Hiranyakashyap's son Prahlad was an ardent devotee of Vishnu. He went against his father's wishes and continued to worship Lord Vishnu. This enraged Hiranyakashyap and he made several attempts to kill Prahlad, but each time Prahlad was saved by the grace of Lord Vishnu.
Contribution of Holika
Hiranyakashyap's sister Holika had a boon that she would not be harmed by fire. Hiranyakashyap planned that Holika should sit in the burning fire with Prahlad in her lap, so that Prahlad would be burnt to death. But the effect of Holika's boon ended when she misused it. Holika was burnt to ashes in the fire, while Prahlad remained safe by the grace of Lord Vishnu.
Significance of Holika Dahan
Holika Dahan symbolizes the victory of good over evil. This festival gives the message that the end of ego and unrighteousness is certain, while truth and righteousness always win.
Holi Celebration
The festival of colors, Holi, is celebrated the next day of Holika Dahan, which symbolizes love, brotherhood and unity.
