The seventh day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Maa Kaalratri. Maa Kaalratri is considered a destructive force, destroying all fears and sufferings of her devotees. Worshiping her dispels the darkness of ignorance and bestows knowledge and power.

Appearance of Maa Kaalratri

  • Maa Kaalratri has a black complexion and is extremely radiant.
  • Her vehicle is a donkey.
  • She has four hands – one holds a sword, the other a thunderbolt, the third grants boons, and the fourth grants protection.
  • Flames of fire emanate from her breath.

Method of Worship

  • Take a bath and vow to observe the fast.
  • Offer fragrance, unbroken rice grains, incense, lamps, and flowers to the idol/picture of Maa Kaalratri.
  • She loves red flowers.
  • Offering jaggery and barley is considered auspicious.
  • Chant the mantra:

    Om Devi Kalaratriye Namah

  • Recite the seventh chapter of Durga Saptashati.
