Vamana Avatar is one of the ten major incarnations (Dashavatara) of Lord Vishnu. This incarnation was taken by Lord Vishnu in Treta Yuga. The purpose of Vamana Avatar was to destroy the pride and arrogance of King Bali and restore the rights of the Gods.
Story of Vamana Avatar
According to mythology, one of the sons of Maharishi Kashyap and Aditi was Indra, the king of the Gods. Once, Mahabali, the king of the demons, defeated the Gods with his might and took over the heaven. King Bali was a great donor and a pious man, but his pride had increased too much.
King Bali organized a yajna so that he could retain his authority over the three worlds. The Gods, who had been exiled from heaven, were extremely worried. They prayed to Lord Vishnu for help.
Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana (a small Brahmin boy) to solve the problem. He reached the yajna of King Bali. Lord Vishnu looked extremely radiant and beautiful in the form of Vamana.
Upon reaching the yagna, Vamana asked for donation from King Bali. He said, "O King, I want only three steps of land."
King Bali humbly said, "O Brahmin God, I can give you more than three steps of land."
Vamana replied, "I want only as much land as I can measure in three steps."
King Bali accepted Vamana's request and approved the donation. Then Vamana assumed his gigantic form. In his first step, he measured the earth, in the second step, the sky, and there was no space left for the third step.
Then King Bali showed his humility and submission and said, "O Lord, place your third step on my head."
Vamana placed his third step on King Bali's head and made him the king of Patala Lok. King Bali's pride ended, and he accepted Lord Vishnu in the Vamana avatar with a true heart. Importance of Vamana Avatar
