Mahalakshmi Vrat Katha
Mahalakshmi Vrat is dedicated to Mata Lakshmi, the wife of Lord Vishnu. This fast starts from Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami and lasts for 16 days and is concluded on Bhadrapada Purnima. This fast is observed for wealth, happiness, prosperity and well-being of the family. By observing this fast methodically, wealth and prosperity are attained by the grace of Mata Lakshmi.

Mahalakshmi Vrat Katha

According to mythology, once upon a time, King Dhanadhipati observed this fast while worshiping Mahalakshmi. The king's subjects were extremely prosperous and happy, but suddenly there was a drought in the kingdom and poverty spread. The king worshiped all the gods and goddesses, but no solution was found. The king then sought guidance from a sage. The sage said, "O Rajan! You should observe Mahalakshmi Vrat. Mata Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and prosperity. By her grace, all the problems of your kingdom will be solved." The king observed Mahalakshmi Vrat for 16 days as per the rules. Mother Lakshmi was pleased with the effect of the fast and blessed the king by giving darshan. Mother Lakshmi said, "O King! Your subjects will be happy and prosperous. There will be a store of wealth, food and splendor in your kingdom." With the blessings of Mother Lakshmi, the king's kingdom became prosperous again. Since then this fast started being observed for happiness, prosperity and splendor.

Method of Mahalakshmi Vrat

  1. Bath and purification

    Take a bath in the morning and wear clean clothes.
  2. Resolve for the fast

    Take a resolution for the fast in front of Mother Lakshmi.
  3. Preparation for worship

    Install the idol or picture of Lakshmi ji in a clean place.
  4. Worship material

    Rice, roli, vermillion, urn, coconut, flowers, sweets, fruits, lamp, and red clothes.
  5. Pujan Vidhi

    1. Offer sandalwood, roli, and sindoor on the idol of Goddess Lakshmi.
    2. Perform Abhisheka with water and panchamrit.
    3. Offer her Suhaag Samagri (bangles, bindi, etc.).
    4. Offer red clothes and jewelry.
  6. Katha Shravan

    Listen or read the Mahalakshmi Vrat Katha with devotion.
  7. Aarti and Prasad

    Perform the Aarti of Goddess Lakshmi and distribute Prasad.
  8. Observance of the fast

    Observe the fast regularly for 16 days.
  9. End of the fast

    End the fast on the 16th day on the full moon day by giving food and donations to Brahmins.
