Story of Somvati Amavasya Vrat
According to the Puranas, once upon a time, a very pious king ruled on the earth. His name was King Harishchandra. He was a follower of truth and religion, and there was peace and happiness in his kingdom. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and regularly observed fast on Mondays. There was not a single sad or poor person in the kingdom of King Harishchandra. His kingdom was happy, and people were very happy. Lord Shiva was pleased with his devotion and told the king, "O King, pleased with your devotion I will make your kingdom even more prosperous, but you have to observe a special fast, so that there is never a shortage of food in your kingdom, and happiness prevails in every family." Lord Shiva advised the king to observe a fast on the day of Somvati Amavasya and said that observing a special fast and worshipping on this day will bring special blessings. King Harishchandra started observing a fast on the day of Somvati Amavasya as per the instructions of Lord Shiva. Thereafter prosperity and peace prevailed in the kingdom, and no difficulty ever arose in the king's kingdom.
